The State Medical Faculty of West Bengal has issued the notification for admission to the Diploma in Pharmacy course for the 2026-27 academic year. D.Pharma registration opens on 13 August 2026 and closes on 20 August 2026 at 5 p.m. — an eight-day window, which is short enough that a missing certificate can cost you the year.
This post walks through what the notification actually says: who can apply, how many seats exist at each institute, how the merit list is drawn up, and — the part most candidates get wrong — which original documents you need to start collecting today rather than during counselling.

Where the D.Pharma registration happens
Applications are submitted online through the official website of the State Medical Faculty of West Bengal, www.smfwb.in. The notification is explicit that the form goes live there on 13 August.
A word of caution that is worth more than any tip in this article: during admission season, several unofficial pages appear claiming to accept D.Pharma registration or offering paid “form filling” services. The fee for this admission is Rs. 600 and it is paid online in favour of the State Medical Faculty of West Bengal. Nobody else needs to be paid anything. If a page asks for more, or asks you to send money to a personal account, leave it.
Who is eligible
Citizenship and domicile
You must be an Indian citizen, and either:
- have been residing in West Bengal continuously for not less than 10 years as on 31.12.2025, or
- be a person whose parent or parents are permanent residents of West Bengal with a permanent address inside the state.
The domicile certificate must come from one of the authorities named in the notification — District Magistrate, Additional District Magistrate, Deputy Magistrate, Deputy Collector, Sub-Divisional Officer, Block Development Officer, the listed police ranks, Commissionerate officers, judicial magistrates, secretariat officers of the rank of Assistant Secretary or above, or Deputy Director and above in a directorate. For candidates who passed 10+2 in 2026, the head of the institution can also certify, using Proforma a2.
This is where candidatures get cancelled every year. The notification states plainly that a domicile certificate issued by an elected representative — a Municipal Commissioner, a Councillor, a member of the three-tier Panchayat system or the GTA, an MLA or an MP — will not be accepted. A certificate signed by your local councillor is not a shortcut; it is a rejection waiting to happen at the verification desk.
The issuing official must also write their full name, designation, place of posting with address, and a landline or mobile number, and their identity card number if they have one.
Educational qualification
You must have passed the Higher Secondary (10+2) examination in the General Stream, or an equivalent examination approved by the Pharmacy Council of India, with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology or Mathematics.
One condition is easy to overlook: you must have separately passed both the theory and the practical examination in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology or Mathematics as applicable. Clearing the subject on aggregate is not enough if the practical was not passed on its own.
Age
The notification asks every applicant to satisfy themselves that they meet the requirements on age limit and educational qualification before submitting the application, but it does not print a specific age figure in the text. Check the age rule stated on the application portal itself when the form opens, and do not assume last year’s figure still applies. If you are unsure, ring the helpdesk before you pay the fee — the fee is non-refundable.
Seat matrix for 2026-27
There are three government pharmacy institutes, and the intake is not identical at all three. Jalpaiguri is smaller than the other two, which candidates from north Bengal often miscalculate.

Jalpaiguri also has GTA reserved seats. Admission against those by the GTA, Darjeeling will be decided later and notified separately, so do not count on them while planning.
EWS and TFW seats
EWS seats are 10% of approved intake and TFW seats are 5%. Both are supernumerary — they sit on top of the approved intake rather than eating into it.
Two things follow from the notification’s wording. First, these seats are filled only by candidates the benefit is meant for, not by the institution. Second, if they are not filled, they stay vacant — they are not handed over to candidates of any other category. So a TFW seat is genuinely reserved for you if you qualify, and genuinely lost to everyone if you do not apply for it.
The TFW waiver covers the tuition fee only, and selection under the scheme is decided during counselling, on merit, from among eligible candidates.
College upgradation
Upgradation is not available this year. Once you are allotted or admitted to a seat at a particular institute, you cannot appear for upgradation to another. Choose with that in mind rather than treating your first allotment as a placeholder.
How candidates are selected
Selection is on the total marks obtained in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics or Biology, whichever is higher, at the H.S (10+2) examination.
So if you sat both Biology and Mathematics, only the better of the two counts:
Merit total = Physics + Chemistry + (Mathematics or Biology, whichever is higher)
How ties are broken
When two candidates end on the same total, the notification settles it in this order:
- Higher marks in Chemistry
- If still tied, higher marks in Physics
- If still tied, higher marks in Mathematics or Biology, whichever is higher
- If still tied, higher age takes the higher merit position
Worth knowing before results day: Chemistry quietly carries more weight than its marks suggest. Two candidates on identical totals are separated by Chemistry first.
Fees
At D.Pharma registration
Rs. 600 for all candidates, paid online in favour of the State Medical Faculty of West Bengal. Online banking charges, where they apply, are borne by you and are extra. The notification calls this a one-time procedure and the fee non-refundable — which is exactly why you should confirm your eligibility before paying rather than after.
At the allotted college during admission

Admitted candidates must deposit the original H.S (10+2) marksheet and certificate with the college against a receipt. Keep that receipt safe. It is what you exchange to get your originals back when you finish the course or resign from it.
Documents to start collecting now
The notification opens with an unusual instruction: candidates are told to procure and collect the original documents in advance, before the process begins. That is not boilerplate. A candidate who cannot produce a required original at verification has their candidature cancelled on the spot.
Twelve items are required at document verification, counselling and admission:
- Downloaded copy of the filled-in application form, along with the provisional rank card
- Original and two self-attested copies of age proof — birth certificate or Madhyamik admit card
- Original and two self-attested copies of the 10+2 or equivalent marksheet
- Original and two self-attested copies of the H.S or equivalent certificate
- Original domicile certificate from the appropriate authority (Proforma a1, a2 or b, as applicable)
- Original eye check-up certificate from a registered eye specialist, certifying visual acuity and absence of colour blindness (Proforma d)
- Original medical fitness certificate from a registered medical practitioner (Proforma c)
- Original and self-attested copy of the SC, ST, OBC or PH certificate, in the appropriate cases
- EWS certificate in the prescribed format, with the self-declaration on sub-caste, family income and assets
- Annual family income certificate for the TFW scheme, in the appropriate format
- Self-undertaking by the candidate in the prescribed format
- Three stamp-size recent colour photographs
Along with the domicile certificate you must produce a supporting residence proof — Aadhaar card, voter card or passport, any one — showing a West Bengal address, in original with a self-attested photocopy.
The proformas are available on the official website. Download them and get them filled on those formats. A certificate written in the doctor’s own wording, on the wrong format, is a rejection at the desk.
If you are an OBC candidate — do this before the portal closes
This is the single most time-sensitive item in the whole notification.
Eligible OBC candidates must declare their OBC class through the designated portal of the Backward Classes Welfare Department, Government of West Bengal, within the stipulated period, as per Gazette Notification No. 945-BCW/MR-23/2026 dated 18.05.2026 (read with No. 944-BCW/MR-23/2026 of the same date), in order to avail the 7% OBC reservation.
A valid original OBC certificate in the prescribed format must be produced at counselling. Failure to produce it cancels the reservation benefit.
No request for further declaration, modification or inclusion of OBC class will be entertained after the online application portal closes. If you have not made the declaration by 20 August, the reservation is gone — and no appeal afterwards will bring it back.
If you are a TFW applicant
Your annual family income from all sources in the preceding financial year, 2025-26, must be less than Rs. 2.50 lakh, and you must be domiciled in West Bengal.
The income certificate must come from an officer of the rank of Block Development Officer, Sub-Divisional Officer, Additional District Magistrate, or a Group-A gazetted officer of similar rank or above, in a rural region; or from an Executive Officer of a Municipality, an Assistant Commissioner or above in a Commissionerate, or a Group-A gazetted officer of similar rank or above, in an urban region. The notification states that an income certificate issued by any other person will not be entertained.
If you are a PH candidate
Admission of physically handicapped candidates is subject to verification and approval by the Medical Board at Medical College & Hospital, 88 College Street, Kolkata 700 073. You must obtain the PH certificate from that board, keep it, and produce it in original during document verification.
The dates, time and venue for the disability evaluation will be notified later on the SMFWB website, so keep checking.
What happens after you register
- Download your documents. After submitting, download the filled-in application form and the provisional rank card. Both are required at counselling. Do not leave this until the portal is under load on the last day.
- Provisional merit list. The list of provisional candidates will be displayed on the official SMFWB website in due course.
- Report physically for verification. Candidates on the provisional list must attend in person with all originals in the appropriate format. Candidature is cancelled automatically if you fail to report on the scheduled date and time.
- Pay the admission fees after verification.
- Counselling and seat allotment. Admission is made from among the candidates present at counselling, in order of merit and reservation quota, until the seats are filled. Dates and venue will be notified later.
Five mistakes that end a D.Pharma registration
- A domicile certificate from a councillor or MLA. Explicitly not accepted, however genuine your residence.
- Missing the OBC declaration deadline. Once the portal closes, the 7% reservation cannot be claimed, no matter what certificate you hold.
- Wrong proforma. The medical fitness, vision and domicile certificates each have a prescribed format on the website. A certificate on a doctor’s own letterhead does not substitute.
- Errors in the submitted form. The notification states that no request for subsequent change in submitted information will be entertained under any circumstances. Read the preview screen before you hit submit.
- Assuming the merit list is the finish line. If scrutiny at any stage finds you ineligible, your candidature stands cancelled even if your name is on the provisional merit list, a seat has been allotted, or you have already been admitted and registered.

Can I change my institute later through upgradation?
No. College upgradation is not available this year. Once allotted or admitted to a seat, you cannot appear for upgradation to another institute.
When is counselling?
